Videographer Perth - What shaped me as a videographer and creative person - Pt1

Updated: Jun 2

I grew up under the Southern Alps of New Zealand on a large farm. My youth shaped me as a videographer and photographer. I remember vividly roaming through the wide open landscape, and watching the burning red sunsets over the mountains. It felt like a dream, but to be immersed in such lush and vibrant landscape from such a young age really shaped me. Our farm was large. Without mobile phones, I would entertain myself by going on adventures. I suppose I somewhat acclimatised to the slow and steady pace, it could have been the constant yet distant whistling of a nor-west wind through the pines. Or the unified patterns rolling with the breeze through golden paddocks of wheat. It gave me an appreciation for the movements of nature, and this taught me about patience and calmness. A certain sensitivity to my environment, and a knowing that no matter what drama may come up, things will be ok in the end. It was something that I learnt from nature that I can trust the process, because the same process that has been forming mountains and bringing new mornings and sunrises for thousands of years was all around me, and still is. I've always been somewhat introverted, but a certain level of self-awareness grew in me, as a product of spending many hours roaming as a small kid in giant, unending landscapes. My father was a photographer, and gave me one of the first digital cameras to come out - it was an impressive 0.3 megapixels. I remember taking this with me on my afternoon adventures, that seemed to span lifetimes of meandering through greens, over paddocks, and towards those distant mountain ranges.

I found framing thirds satisfying, finding balance in a frame, which seemed to come naturally to me. I enjoyed taking in my surroundings, and waiting for a shot to come to me. This was the epitome of carefree photography, with no goal or agenda in mind, as a result from the innocence of youth. Now 30 years into the future from that young kid, I still hold the DNA of those lost moments spent within the embrace of those sun soaked nature days, the essence of that calmness, respect and open curiosity which I bring to work today. As a videographer living in Perth I still enjoy walking along the beaches and enjoying the nature. This is part 1 of a series exploring what shaped me as a creative person, to share an insight into my world and how my perspectives were formed. The series covers my adventures into creativity, photography, videography, meditation, wellness and spiritually. Stay tuned for following installments. Sam Irwin / Videographer Perth
