Finding the Right Fit: 5 Things to Look For in Perth Professional Photographers

I’m based right here in Scarborough, and every time I pack my gear for a shoot, I realise just how fortunate I am. We have an absolutely stunning coastline right on our doorstep, from the sweeping dunes and epic sunsets of the beach to the vibrant energy of the esplanade. It is the perfect canvas for natural, lifestyle photography.

But with so many incredibly talented Perth professional photographers to choose from, how do you know who is the right fit for your family or brand? Booking a photographer is a very personal choice, and you want to make sure the person behind the lens understands exactly what you are hoping to capture.

Here are the top five things I recommend looking for when hiring a professional photographer.

1. A Style That Actually Feels Like You

Photography styles vary wildly. Some photographers are known for their dark and moody tones, some for bright and airy studio shoots, and others for highly posed, traditional portraits. My approach is entirely rooted in a natural, documentary style. For me, it is not just about capturing what a scene looks like; it is about capturing how it feels. Before you book anyone, scroll through their portfolio and ask yourself: "Can I picture my family (or my business) in these images?" If you want authentic, candid moments, make sure their portfolio reflects that.

2. The Ability to Give Gentle Direction

A common misconception about "documentary" or "lifestyle" photography is that the photographer just stands in a corner and hopes for the best. The reality is that a totally hands-off approach rarely works. Most people feel incredibly awkward when a camera is pointed at them. You want a photographer who lets the reality of the moment breathe but provides clear, gentle direction exactly when it is needed. I will always guide you into the best light or suggest a subtle shift in posture to ensure you look fantastic, while still feeling completely like yourself.

3. A Focus on Connection Over Perfection

We have all seen those photos where everyone is staring at the camera with forced, identical smiles. They might be perfectly composed, but they often lack soul. When I am shooting, whether it is a family splashing in the shallows down at Brighton Beach or a local business owner in their workspace, I am watching for the in-between seconds. The unguarded laugh, the quiet connection, the spontaneous chaos. You want a photographer who prioritises genuine emotion over getting everyone to sit perfectly still.

4. Transparent Pricing and Packages

There is nothing worse than falling in love with a photographer's work only to be hit with hidden costs or confusing packages after the shoot is done. A true professional will be completely upfront about their pricing, what is included in the session fee, and how you will receive your final images. You should know exactly what the investment looks like before you even pay a deposit.

5. A Vibe You Actually Enjoy - Perth Professional Photographers

This is probably the most important point. You are going to be spending a few hours with this person, often in very intimate or personal settings. If you do not click with them, or if their energy makes you feel stressed, that tension will absolutely show up in your photos. Have a chat with them on the phone before booking. You want someone who makes you feel relaxed, supported, and confident.
