The Brief

Beanstalk AgTech runs PropaGATE, a program that pilots new technology in Western Australian agrifood businesses. One pilot, at Spinifex Brewing Co. in Stake Hill, trialled a new approach to brewery wastewater management.

Beanstalk needed a case study film to show the program's funders and partners what the pilot had achieved on the ground. That included government bodies and large agribusinesses, and the film had to help secure further funding. Beanstalk is based in Melbourne, so they needed a Perth crew who could run the shoot on site and handle the edit remotely.

Klara Kalocsay, Beanstalk's Head of Marketing and Communications, found me through this website and sent the brief through the contact form.

The Challenge

Many voices, one film. Five people spoke on camera, representing Spinifex Brewing Co., Beanstalk AgTech, the Grower Group Alliance and the Food Innovation Precinct Western Australia. Each organisation needed its role named correctly and its message included, and the funders wanted collaboration to come through clearly.

A shoot date that nearly fell over. The week before filming, the technology being profiled went offline for safety checks after an incident on site. The shoot was confirmed again four days out, once the system was running.

A hard deadline for the teaser. PropaGATE was hosting an industry showcase of the pilot at Spinifex on 22 October, and registrations were lower than hoped. The teaser had to be finished first, and fast, to help fill the room.

The Approach

Planning around a fixed day. Klara helped to build the run sheet and I advised on the timing: interview setup, a lighting and two-camera configuration that could be reset quickly between speakers, and a B-roll window. While the date was in doubt, I held the days either side open so the shoot could move without a scramble.

On the day. Five interviews were filmed on a two-camera setup, with B-roll of the brewery and the wastewater system between sessions. After the interviews wrapped, I flew the drone over the facility and the brewery in the late afternoon light.

A transcript the next day. The evening after the shoot I sent a full transcript, grouped by speaker and timecoded. Klara used it to choose soundbites and to find every point where interviewees named the partners and funders correctly. With five stakeholders and a funder reviewing, that step saved several rounds of back and forth.

Interview cut first, polish second. The first edit was interviews only, with no music or B-roll, so partners could approve the story and their own words before any finishing time was spent. It ran to five minutes and came down to around four once the partners had chosen what to keep and the Grower Group Alliance had made its final quote selection. Only then did B-roll, drone, music, on-screen names and the program branding go in.

Matching an existing series. The film follows the format of earlier PropaGATE videos: on-screen names in the program's fonts, a PropaGATE watermark in the brand red, and a closing slide crediting every funding and supporting partner.

What Was Delivered

  • Case study film, around 4 minutes - for funders, partners and the Beanstalk website

  • Teaser, 30 seconds - built to drive registrations for the 22 October showcase, with event details on the end slide

  • Full timecoded transcript grouped by speaker

  • Raw footage and stills on a hard drive, posted to the client in Melbourne

  • Drone footage of the facility and brewery

The Result

The Result

The teaser was turned around within a day of being prioritised, so Beanstalk could start promoting the showcase straight away. Late notes from the funder, such as making the wastewater focus explicit and adjusting end-slide wording, were also actioned the same day.

Beanstalk has since lined up a second case study video from the same shoot.

Planning something similar? If you need a case study that a funder, board or tender panel will actually watch, I can help - including getting several stakeholders' messages into one film without it turning into a committee edit.
