Drone technology has increased exponentially over the last few years, making it possible to use drones for a wide number of tasks that previously were not possible.
I currently use the DJI Mavic 2 Pro for most of my professional drone work. I chose this model for a number of reasons including that the weight is below 2kg, meaning it is very accessible and it is reasonably quiet.
The main reason I bought this model was for the camera – it has a Hasselblad 20MP sensor. This means there is no trade off in quality and I can use it for a number of professional applications including promotional videography and photography for real estate, weddings, or for asset inspections.
I began flying drones seven years ago in New Zealand, using some of the early DJI drones. Coming from a background as a professional cinematographer, I enjoyed being able to capture landscape in a cinematic way that hadn’t been possible before.
This is one reason that sets me apart as a professional drone operator – being able to combine my background and understanding of cinematic concepts to capture the best quality of image for my clients.
In 2019 I completed my Remote Pilot Licence with CASA, giving me the ability to be able to fly drones commercially within CASA legislation. In 2020 I undertook the process to gain my Remote Pilot Certificate, that is highest commercial drone certification available.
This means I am able to apply for permits where proposed drone flights may be restricted.
It is an important to consider when hiring anyone to undertake drone flights that they are properly trained, they have public liability insurance, and are able to follow all the requirements as set out by CASA.
No matter what the job is, if it’s a simple photo or video shoot, or a complex asset inspection, I enjoy to make the process easy for my clients by taking care of all pre-flight planning and permits.
